Banyana Banyana suffered a blow in their quest to win the 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations.

Forward star Thembi Kgatlana was officially eliminated for the remainder of the tournament.

The 26-year-old was stretchered in Banyana’s Group C final match against Botswana in the 69th minute on Sunday.

Banyana Banyana’s doctor, Dr Rodney Mokoka, confirmed the injury and said the player would return to South Africa for surgery.

“Thembi Kgatlana completely ruptured the left Achilles tendon in the match against Botswana, this was confirmed by an MRI this morning,” Mokoka told SAFA official. website.

“Unfortunately, she will be absent from the entire WAFCON 2022 tournament and she will have to undergo surgery in her home country of South Africa.

“The post-operative healing will be guided by certain milestones that we must achieve; of course, a comprehensive rehabilitation program will be in place for her.

“The faster we hit those milestones, the quicker she’ll be back on the court.”

Mokoka also gave an update on Jermaine Seoposnwe, who also did not finish the match against Botswana due to injury.

“Jermain Seoposnwe suffered a soft tissue injury to her ankle in the match against Botswana. She is fine and will be available for training tomorrow. [on Tuesday]”, Mokoka said.
