Southgate speaks out in defense of Maguire
The Three Lions had a comfortable victory over their African opponents. Ollie Watkins gave England the lead and Raheem Sterling scored next. Harry Maguire’s defensive partner, Tyrone Mings, scored England’s third goal in the 3-0 win.
The Manchester United captain’s name was mocked before the game started, much to the surprise of manager Gareth Southgate and Maguire’s teammates, including Declan Rice.
He said: ” I thought those words were a joke, an absolute joke. The way he played for us was absolutely phenomenal. I don’t understand.”
“He’s playing for England and you should support him not just because he’s a player, but also because of the performances he’s got. I don’t get it.”
“His performance was really faultless. The team is completely united. We realize that everyone has difficult moments but he is a top player and he will get through it. .”
“I remember decades ago a couple of players were booed in an England shirt and that was never acceptable to me. The fans should always support their team. Totally embarrassing . to anyone booing tonight. Harry Maguire is incredible every time he plays for England.”
