Ricardo Nascimento scored in the first minute as Royal AM kicked off the new season with a tough 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Chatswroth Stadium on Saturday.
Former defender Mamelodi Sundown found the ball in the net, stabbing the home side after a challenge in the box with Amakhosi unable to clear the ball properly.
It’s a fresh-looking Chiefs outfit given by head coach Arthur Zwane with new signings Zitha Kwinika, Siyethemba Sithebe, Yusuf Maart and Ashley Du Preez all starting the encounter.
After conceding the opening goal too soon, Amakhosi slowly entered the game and Du Preez should have equalized in the 26th minute but was denied by the home team’s goalkeeper Hugo Nyame.
Royal AM was blocked for most of the second half but looked dangerous on a counter-attack and with such an opportunity Nascimento could double the lead but Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma made a brilliant save. .
Amakhosi put everything on the line in the late game with another debutant, Dillan Solomons, coming on from the bench.
The Soweto giants, although unable to break through the solid defense of the home team, won the maximum points from the encounter.
