Erik ten Hag and Tyrell Malacia (Manchester United)
Manchester United have completed the purchase of the Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia on Tuesday as Erik ten Hag has the first contract since leading the Old Trafford team.
United have landed Malacia in a reported £12.95m ($15.4m) deal after making a late decision for the Dutch full-back, who was close to joining the French club Lyon.
The 22-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. It is a landmark deal for Ten Hag, who has been linked with a host of potential signings before making Malacia the first acquisition of his United reign.
Ten Hag arrived at United in May after finishing a successful spell at Ajax, where he had plenty of opportunities to witness Malacia’s quality against Dutch rivals Feyenoord.
Malacia, who made 136 appearances for Feyenoord, said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling to join Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new teammates and a great manager lead us.
“I know from playing with his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities he has and what he demands in his players.
“Although I know I’m still young and will continue to grow, I can promise the United fans that I will drop everything on the pitch every time I put on the red shirt.”
Malacia, who plays mostly at left-back, is expected to feature in the squad United will depart for their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia on Friday.
“I will always be grateful to Feyenoord for everything they have done for me and my family. This would not have been possible without them,” Malacia said.
“I’m now ready to focus on my future with United, and helping my new club achieve success.”
Introduced by the Netherlands five times, Malacia will most likely compete with England left-back Luke Shaw for a place in United’s starting XI.
United’s director of football John Murtough said: “Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young player with stellar experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and all-around. international title set for the Netherlands”.
“We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff in the years to come.”
Ten Hag’s signings are starting to pick up speed, with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen reportedly agreeing to join United on a free transfer following an impressive loan spell at Brentford last season.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong and Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez are also believed to have moved to Old Trafford.
Besides reshuffled the squad that finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season, Ten Hag must deal with the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo missed training for “family reasons” on Monday after reportedly requesting a transfer after United failed to qualify for the Champions League.
United are said to be determined to keep the Portuguese forward, who finished as top scorer last season.
